2014 UK Tiger Mega Meet on The English Riviera

The venue for the 2014 UK Tiger Mega Meet has been confirmed as The Morningside Hotel in Torquay, on the English Riviera! It will take place on the weekend of Friday 9th ~ Sunday 11th May.

The Morningside Hotel - Babbacombe - Torquay
(Street View)

The hotel is situated on Babbacombe Downs in Torquay, high above the beaches at Oddicombe & Babbacombe with stunning sea views across Lyme Bay and up the coast towards Portland Bill. Now that I've done my bit for the English Riviera Tourist Board, here's the itinerary...

    ITINERARY
    • Friday 9th May
Riders arrive at their accommodation in Torquay at their leisure.

The Mega Meet starts with an informal social gathering in the bar at the Morningside from 7:00pm.
(Arrangements for Friday evening meal are on-going and more details on this will follow in due course)

For those who may have arrived early on Friday, weather permitting a local bimble can be arranged around the roads of Torbay / South Devon late on Friday afternoon.

    • Saturday 10th May
Pre-ride briefing at the Morningside after breakfast.

Group ride (or rides?) - all day

Informal social event (including a meal) at the Morningside from 7:00pm, details to follow.

    • Sunday 11th May
No group ride is planned for Sunday as many people will be returning home. However, for those wanting to explore more of the South West area on Sunday we could arrange a ride that heads out towards the Exe Valley, Exmoor & Somerset to emerge somewhere up the M5 towards Bristol for those that want to take a slightly more scenic route homewards. A separate "Sunday Rides" thread will probably be started in the coming weeks/months.

The hope is that as many people as possible will be staying at the Morningside, but there are plenty of accommodation options in & around Torquay to suit all tastes & budgets should the Morningside be full or if you have a strong desire to stay somewhere else. Further accommodation options will be provided in a separate thread in due course. All accommodation in the Babbacombe area of Torquay is within a short walking distance of the Morningside, but we'll be looking into local transport options to/from Babbacombe for people who are staying in other areas. The idea is to allow people to relax & enjoy Saturday evening without having to ride back to their hotel, B&B, tent etc.

Hotel & Local Info (this will also be copied onto the 'accommodation' thread)
The Morningside is a 16-room family-run venue. They have a couple of single rooms, but most of their rooms are doubles that can be converted to twins.

If guests are willing & able to share a room then the price per person on a bed & breakfast basis will be 35 per night. Ideally we would like to have as many members as possible staying at the hotel. Given that most of the rooms will be configured as twins, it might be worth (where possible) finding a room-mate before making a booking. The hotel 'may' be able to offer a twin room on a single occupancy basis, but the above price assumes that we try to get close to maximum occupancy if we can.

For bookings, contact the hotel directly and ask to speak to Jon-Paul. Contact details can be found in the link at the top of this post. When booking, be sure to mention that you're attending the Tiger Mega Meet.

The hotel has a large, level, gravel car-park with plenty of room to park the bikes.

The hotel has a warm basement/cellar room that can be used for drying gear should the South West weather decide to go all "Dolgellau" on us!

The hotel bar stocks all of the usual drinks but we're also trying to arrange for a barrel of guest ale to be available in the bar from the local Bays Brewery.

There are local shops, supermarkets, banks & ATMs all located within 1/4~1/2 mile of the hotel and there are two petrol stations within 1 mile.

Hi Moose... Put this up in the accommodation thread... that's the one for general discussions about accommodation etc..

    Greg
It's a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you're ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.
