I think an alternative running in method has been employed.

Oil change after 170 miles seems a bit of a waste of money to me but each to his own............... :002:

I disagree. Nothing wrong with fresh oil and it seems reasonable to me that most of the "crap" will be out and about in the first few miles of running the engine. So, if you don't mind changing the oil, it seems like a good idea.

Is it necessary? Probably not but I'd rather pay $40 now and have peace of mind.

I plan to do 500 miles over a weekend (when I get the bike) so collect friday, service monday, 170 Mile oil change would be on the side of a motorway :107:

Lots of metal shavings, machining slivers, etc come out in the first 20 miles of running a new engine. Doughnut's oil is evidence of this. In extreme cases, these particles can be enough to plug up the oil filter enough to open the bypass valve, sending unfiltered oil back into the engine.

This is less of a problem in modern engines, but I still see frequent oil/filter changes during break-in as cheap insurance. Use regular mineral oil, not synthetic, during break-in. I change the oil and filter after getting the bike home from the dealership (and yes, you can see particles in the oil even that early), again around 300 miles, and again at the normal 600-mile first service interval.

Think of it this way: it can't hurt, and it can prevent metal fragments from working their way back into the engine and causing unnecessary wear early in the engine's life.
