2014 Mega Meet - Travel Information & Discussions
« on: April 20, 2014, 04:06:06 PM »
I had said that I'd put some route (travel) information in the 'Local Area Info' thread but decided it would be better to split local info & travel info into different threads. This thread can now also be used to discuss meeting points en-route for those travelling to Babbacombe, Torquay.

The new lower speed restrictions (50 & 30mph) have now been introduced towards the end of the A380 dual-carriageway approaching the Penn Inn roundabout at Newton Abbot, where the road changes to a single carriageway. This is because the main A380 single carriageway into Torquay is undergoing major work while they build the new South Devon Link Road. This permanently busy route is a bit more messy than usual, but on the plus side, filtering on a bike isn't too bad in the area!

There are alternative routes that can be used to get to Babbacombe from the end of the M5 motorway near Exeter, and I'll add some suggestions in the next couple of days. I've added some suggestions below.

The following are all acceptable routes to the Babbacombe area of Torquay for anyone travelling down to the SouthWest via the M5 (including A303/A30 to Exeter then M5). They all start at the end (J31) of the M5 motorway so would also work if anyone is coming eastbound on the A30 from Cornwall etc.

The links are all to Google Maps with directions, distances & durations so you can take your pick from the list. Sorry I haven't turned them into Garmin route files. If I get time I'll do that. FYI, the Morningside Hotel's post code is TQ1 3LF.

Hope these help....

Route 1 - A38, A380, A3022, Hele Rd
Standard route to Torquay assuming traffic at the Penn Inn roundabout (Newton Abbot) is OK.

Route 2 - A38, A380, Milber (back road), Hele Rd
Alternate route from Penn Inn roundabout to Torquay via the (occasionally narrow) back road through Milber and into Barton.

Route 3 - A38, A380, A381, A379 coast road
Alternate route if the approach to Penn Inn is busy. Need to turn off at the A381 Teignmouth exit (Ware Barton) to see far enough ahead for traffic status approaching Penn Inn. You can rejoin the A380 if it's clear but can't turn back to the A381 if you miss the exit!!

Route 4 - A38, A380, B3192, A379 coast road
Alternate route to avoid Penn Inn completely by taking the scenic route via Ashcombe & Teignmouth and the coast road across the Shaldon Bridge.

Route 5 - A38, A380, A3022 to Torquay Sea-Front, A379 Babbacombe Rd
Same as the standard route but with the option to go via Torquay sea-front & harbour.
