Cooling Fan not operating
« on: July 13, 2018, 05:57:42 PM »
I have experienced a problem which Ive never encountered before. The temperature Guate on my 2011 XC comes up to the midway position when started from cold fairly quickly and then stabilises after riding for a short while as expected. However, I was in heavy traffic yesterday and the engine started to give off more heat than usual but the temperature gauge remained in the mid position and the fan didnt cut in as expected. Does anyone know if this is a common problem? Im personally wondering if its the sensor not working properly because if it was okay surely the gauge would show an increase and not remain in the mid position?

Are you sure about the fan.  The blast of hot air is a good indicator that the fan is working.  That and the gauge not climbing would indicate cooling system working as advertised.

Thats a good point KM but I didnt hear it like I could on previous bikes, although tbh Im also a bit deaf. Ill check it out next time to make sure. Thanks for pointing that out as it could stop me looking for a problem that isnt there!

Trust your temp gauge, not you hearing, especially in heavy traffic.

To convince yourself go someplace quiet and try a test there. Put it on the stand, let it run up to fan temp and you will feel the fan flow with your hand and probably hear it too. from memory, I think you can see the blades turning too.

There is a fan fuse to check also, but most likely all is  ok.
Laterally unstable unless moving.

Actually what you see when the fan is running is just the outer circular guard. You can't see the blades at all. So if you see nothing the fan is running. Also worth noting the fan is fairly quiet. I only really hear it when I switch off and it runs down.

Iirc the fan on mine only cuts in when gauge is at about 2/3-3/4.
