One Rack & Several Top Boxes ...possible ?
« on: August 09, 2018, 09:40:45 AM »
Hi All,

I am wondering if it is possible to have one rack (top plate) on my new XRT and have two different size top boxes ?   Why ?  Well, one (say 35L or so) for "everyday reality" where I just put my disc lock, zip out jacket liner and water bottle with enough room for a spot of light shopping, and another one (say 48L or so) for the "dream trip" once or twice a year if I go off on tour and need to pack a week or two worth of clothes plus camera kit in the top box and 30L Lomo dry bag.

Specifically I am looking at the SHAD top boxes but it's a general query as I have not decided what to get yet.

(I'm not keen on fitting panniers because I dislike a lot of the frame kits that have to stay on the bike)

Thanks !

If you go for something like the giving monkey range you can have a whole range of top boxes on the same plate.

Their monokey pannier frames are 'quick release' (takes a few seconds) too.

Give a man a fish and he'll demand chips, a six pack of stella, 20 fags and a scratch card to go with it. Make him do some work for his fish. He'll aporeciate it more.

The Shad plate fits all their cases as far as I know.  My 37L came with the plate as standard.

Here's my set up
SW Motec Rear Rack  - no drilling
SW Motec adapter Plate  - For Monolock

Kappa KGR 52 Backbox
2x KGR 33 Cases.

Givi PLR Quick release pannier rack

All on when touring 2 up
Just a 33ltr Side case - used a back box for days out 1 up.

Use the plate also on its own to strap my 60ltr LOMO dry bag as well occasionally

Kappa boxes are the  same quality  as Givi & same 10kg loading   - but much cheaper if you shop around - especially direct from Italy  :002:

Givi monokey for me also. 52 top box and 2 46 's for the panniers either of which can be used as a top box. Two e21 side panniers for commuting or short trips.  Totally over the top, but  a second set of slimmed down racks for use with the much smaller fuel exhaust.

My main use for a top box is somewhere semi-secure to dump helmets when we stop anywhere. I used a Givi e36 for a long time, it fitted 2 Shoei helmets on their sides. Missus bought me an Arai, wouldn't fit any way up, so I bought a Givi Trekker 52L, fits 2 Arai's in. Problem solved. S'pose a smaller box would be handy for solo riding, still needs to be tall enough to fit a helmet in. And secure enough to stop the passing scrote from nicking it.

Givi all the way - Trekker outback 42 top box for general use, V47nnt 47ltr for 2 helmets use. - I then have the PLR6413 quick release brackets so there are only 3 small brackets left on the bike which you hardly notice. These racks allow the use of any Givi / Kappa flat sided panniers. I have the Trekker Dolomiti panniers in aluminium at 499 a pair look brilliant with or without the trekker outback top case  :002: I have had this set up on the last 3 bikes and it covers all eventualities and looks really neat when the boxes are not in use. - plus Givi EA118 QR tank bag.  :002:
