Blasphemy - what are the best Tiger 800 XRT rivals?
« on: September 16, 2018, 07:54:26 AM »
 :431:

But I test rode the Tiger 800XRT yesterday for the second time and whilst I think it is a very nice bike, I don't sit on it and think I love this - I must get one.   I appreciate all the good qualities it has - a fine machine - but it doesn't quite do it for me.

I'm aware that this could certainly be seen as a selfish question and I guess you all may be the worst audience in the world to ask this and if so, my apologies.  But what do you think are the best rivals for the Tiger 800?

I am looking for a bike that I can ride every day with some commuting, certainly with pillion pretty often, that can tour in comfort and is good fun on a Peak District road when you open the throttle.

Have tried a Multistrada and found it top heavy and ungainly around town.  I really like the KTM Super Adventure 1090 but the insurance costs are eye watering and am trying to come up with a list of other bikes to test ride.  Currently, it's a short list: BMW S1000XR, Kawasaki Z1000SX, Tracer GT and that is about it.   The Africa Twin and BMW GS are out as the bars are too wide to get down the side of our house.

Am asking a knowledgeable audience that seems full of helpful suggestions and advice and again, sorry if this seems totally inappropriate but am really struggling to decide what to buy and it may well still be the Tiger which as I said, I appreciate is a lovely machine.

Nothing wrong with the topic but by discussing other bikes it's not really Tiger 800 related, so moved to "On Two Wheels" board.

Suzuki V-Strom 1000 or even the 650 which has more than enough go for two up touring.

BTW: A hacksaw and about 10 minutes manual labour will sort out wide bars.

Versys - 650 or 1000.

I had a 2016 Versys 1000 which was the best bike I have owned (72 to date), however it is big and heavy - once moving it is very flickable with the nicest clutch you will ever use, but the weight killed it for me in the end - I would certainly try it.

Another one I have my eye on is the Moto Guzzi V85 TT.
Depending on the weight and actual on road performance it could slot nicely into the market for those looking for a bike with a 19" front wheel. With 80hp it won't have the zip of a Tiger in the twisties but it may well be a great touring option.

The new BMW 850GS looks interesting, as does the upcoming KTM 790 Adventure

I have test driven the 1090 Adventure and it was absolutely fantastic.  I would buy it tomorrow but cannot get insurance for a decent price. Astronomic!

Am test riding the Tracer 900GT tomorrow.

Thanks to all for the responses - much appreciated.

Having owned a Wee Strom I can say that it is not a competitor for the Tiger.  It's a good capable bike but doesn't have the wow factor the Tiger has, or the power, or etc etc.  It does have a good fairing though.  Good at catching cross winds that is.
