Loud rubbing noise from back side when stopping
« on: September 25, 2018, 05:29:16 PM »
Hi Guys,

I've just bought a new tiger 800 XCA (finally!) and made about 400km with it. Everything would be great if not one strange thing. When I am braking and am about to stop (~7km/h) once per 50 stops I can hear very loud rubbing noise somewhere from behind me (I think it's from the left side). It's very loud and it sounds like brake pads finished and metal rubs brake disc (rubbing/squealing). When I stop, sound is gone and when I move again, it's not there again. It is back after another xx km ridden.

I think I can still hear it even if I don't brake with rear brake. I went back to my dealer, they checked brakes, they made a short test ride and found nothing. It worries me because it is very loud, I can hear it from time to time (so it's not a small rock in rear brake) and I can't really reproduce it (as I said it happens from time to time (let's say 15 times within 400km).

Do you have any idea what can it be? Maybe it will just "break in" and go away? I will be grateful fo any advice!

For noises from your 'Backside' you need another forum!! English joke - sort of!

Seriously, hope you get an answer as I have an Xca too

if its brand new, then its covered by the warranty. go to your dealer and ask them to diagnose

I did that, they cleaned brake caliper, made a test ride and heard nothing. Like I said, it's hard to reproduce, because it occurs from time to time. I just fitted my GoPro on a back fender to catch this sound. Maybe it will happen tomorrow...

Have a look at the rear, lower chain guide

It's similar to this:

or this:

Very loud, only when almost stopped, only from time to time.

It is exactly like in this movie, but a constant sound for few meters of riding until I stop.

The comments on that YouTube clip suggests the noise may be a warped rotor/disc

I have been through this pain.

1. The disk was replaced under warranty, better for a while but the noise returned.

2. Month or so later the 'rear caliper carrier' was replaced under warranty, much better much improved.

3. I still get the noise on occasion a year later, I think this might be because the new disk was subsequently also warped in the period before the new caliper carrier was replaced. Next service might tell.

Something for you to take up with Triumph.
