I normally use Wurth dry chain lube and cleaner, but picked up some WD-40 cleaner and wax from Aldi. I'll be interested to see how it fairs!

I'm currently riding my 800xc round the world (in Chile, South America at the moment). I use an eScottoiler and solely use regular gear oil as recommended in the box by D.I.D. Chain and rear sprocket have 36,000 miles on them with still some left. I've ridden lots of dirt and mud and a little sand as well as regular roads. I like the electronic Scottoiler because it's easy to just turn it off when it's dry and dusty or turn it up when raining.

When the bike/chain is covered in crap I do clean the chain. Spray some WD40 or equivalent onto a cloth (never directly on the chain as the WD40 ruins the rubber seals) and wipe over the chain and sprockets.
