2015 xca electrical failure.
« on: May 23, 2019, 12:05:50 PM »
Took bike on a run last night after doing a few jobs.
Shorting out cruise control on / off switch, new tyres, adding folding gear lever. brake pads change out.  All good last night. cruise control worked fine.
Today , on dual carriageway the bike died. Engine off , all instruments dead. I coasted to a stop. Bike totally dead electrically. Abandoned bike and stepped over barrier. Got bike collected .
I was assuming that the main fuse under the battery was the problem, so I went to replace it only to find that it was fine. Eventually traced it to a blown 15a fuse. Identifier for this fuse was a key symbol (physical key symbol).  Replaced it and all was well again. Havent driven the bike yet but it appears to be fine.
Very concerned now about what caused the fuse to blow and whether it will happen again particularly as I will be on a ferry in a week.  Ill work through relays and connections etc later .
Anyone any ideas?

Fuses do age.  So as well as going open circuit for their designed purpose they can break as well.  The fact that replacing the fuse and the new one didn't immediately blow makes me think ageing was the problem.  That or you have an intermittent issue with your immobiliser (if that's what the key symbol symbolises)
Stupid is as stupid does.

Thats my hope. Not great comfort though with a trip involving a ferry coming up. Bike is a 6000 mile 2015 stored indoors. My 2013 xc was over 30 k miles when I changed.  It's a funny circuit to blow. I assume that its the immobiliser . It took out everything.

What is reason for shorting out the Cruise control switch?

Ta. I was wondering if it was a secret mod or something.

The 'key symbol' fuse protects these circuits:

Fuse #9 = Ignition Switch, Rear Light and USB Socket
15 amp

Laterally unstable unless moving.

Good man. I hadnt got to manual yet. Bad design if a shorting filament in a bulb can take the bike out mid flight.
