Need help. 2012 800 XC is puking coolant.
« on: June 13, 2019, 03:03:13 AM »
My 2012 800 XC has recently started puking coolant from the vent tube near the foot pegs.
The weather has been mild, not hot, and the rides have been calm and on pavement, so the bike is not working very hard. I haven't touched the coolant in 2 years so nothing new in terms of coolant level in the rad or expansion tank, the bike has not been dropped or on its side, engine doesn't seem to be running abnormally hot (the usual 5 bands on the temp gauge), and the rad fan kicks on as you'd expect.

Any thoughts?

First thing I'd check is that the coolant isn't contaminated, if it is, it points towards a possible head gasket failure

Then check the pump is working, start it up with the radiator cap off and you'll hopefully see the coolant being pumped.
If all's good there, I'd replace the radiator cap.

I wouldn't normally throw parts at something but the thermostat is a PIA to get at

Dunno if this is the problem but a few years back I had a GSXR 1000 K5 and it did the same thing , I heard all sorts of horror stories about head needing skimmed etc, found it to be the rad cap had lost tension in the spring and wasnt able to rise to realease pressure , new cap sorted it.
Hope this helps

The radiator cap is relative cheap en would be the first part I would change in this case.

I've got a cap on order.  In the meantime, I'll be inspecting for oil contamination, making sure water pump is functioning, and searching for any other gremlins.  I appreciate the input I've received from this forum's members.

I had the coolant boiling in the expansion tank and overflowing on my 2012 - New radiator cap cured the problem  :028:
