chain getting dry really fast
«

These weeks have been quite rainy, but still using the same lube as my other motorcycles, I expect it to last around 800-1000Km, but strangely the chain gets all dry suddenly after maybe 400Km.
I left this morning it was greased normally, got to the office 48Km later and it was bone dry, didn't even rain this morning... I was going to install a chain oiler, but this is puzzling me how dry this chain gets, anyone have an idea why !?

Depends on what lube you're using, most spray and wax specialist chain lubes are dry film types and work by coating the chain with (usually) Teflon, this appears dry the next day, it's only oils and old fashioned greases that stay "wet" looking

If you're using a spray lube general recommendation is usually every 250-300km.

But on my Honda or Yamaha as I said, same spray and it would never ever be shiny as it is today, so fast it would usually last much longer, that's the weird thing
Guess I'll go fetch some good old gear oil and manually oil it tonight, with the oil do you need to put more often !?

Depends on the weather. I prefer to see my chain "wet" with oil so I tend to activate my oiler maybe once every two days if I'm just commuting. Long rides every time I refuel.

The only problem with oils, even thicker viscosity gear oils, is that most of it ends up on the rear wheel the first time out, that's why chain lubes went to dry film.
It's a good idea to clean and lube your chain much more frequently in autumn/ winter, especially if you ride in wet weather like we've been having across Europe this "summer"

I honestly never cleaned a chain in my life, and my AT chain was still good after 34'000Km, I'm just careful it is greased in winter against road salt.
When I did lube every 400Km, my Honda mechanic told me it was too much and it flung on the rear rim, so I then spaced and 800 was just fine, I still guess cleaning oil is easier than the grease grime from the rim, so I'll be happy to switch to a oiler !

Make sure your oiler works properly and lubricates both sides of the chain, the Scottoiler dual injector I had on my 650cc AT didn't

Mmhh I've never seen oilers that do both sides, is this really necessary, because like with my grease spray, I just lube the inside of the chain, like everyone does and it's fine !?
