New Engine - Tick Noise
« on: December 11, 2019, 08:10:49 AM »
So I picked up the new Tiger 800 XCA, I have noticed that there is a tick noise coming from the engine, the tick noise increases in cadence in accordance with the RPMs. I took it to the dealer, who initially suggests it may be due to the run-in oil being of light/thiner than the normal oil and not to worry about it.

I finished the first run in period, took the bike in for a service, they did the service, changed the oil, however the tick is still there, they have assured me that everything is fine and not to worry, however i feel an engine shouldn't make a ticking noise, especially one that increases in cadenace with with RPMS.

The engine has 980kms on it at the moment, interested to hear peoples thoughts on this situation

I asked at the factory if the bikes left with a running-in oil, I was told they leave with the Castrol Power1 f/s 10w40 they recommend for normal use. At the first service the dealer will drain that & puts some cheap stuff in.

Mine never ticked, maybe you have a problem. I'd keep a record of communications with the dealer. Has he queried it with the factory? Doubtful.

My XCA has done about 10,000ks and makes all sorts of noises, my previous XCX did the same.  They are not a quiet engine in my opinion, nothing like my previous 1999 Fireblade, engine was like a Swiss watch!

The 800 sounds like the swiss watch to me, after having the; 900, 955 & 1050, they all sound like an offset barrel of bricks on a spit, at tickover. Great when revved.

I would go immediately to the Service... If I had no noise in my engine

Only noise on mine was when I changed the oil , a clattering until the chain tensioner filled up.

My  XRT engine makes lots of unwelcome noises, principally from the timing chain and/or cam gear. My dealerships reply is this. "You can stand 10 bikes next to each other and they will all sound differently".

Oh yeh!

From engineering point of view that sounds ludicrous.....

Thanks all for the thoughts.

I'll keep a history of the communications with the dealer and when I go somewhere else with some spare time I will seek the advice of another dealer.

Cheers again
