New or used stepper motor
« on: January 31, 2020, 04:57:14 PM »
I am heading towards replacing the dreaded stepper motor on my 62 plated 800ABS.
Ran great this morning, now it will not start or tick over unless I hold the revs up.
Should I go for a used stepper motor of bite the bullet and get a new one?
Also, am I going to have to fork out for one of these datatune  things?
I have a replacement starter motor from a 675 street triple which I plan to fit at the same time.

Try cleaning the linkage first.

PO of my '14 replaced the stepper motor with a manual adjuster from another model Triumph.  I don't know the details but I'm sure Google does.....   :169:

It a minor problem, just clean the shaft, there loads of posts about this 'fault'here. The later models have a sealed stepper motor

Not much IMO, it just needs maintenance

Even if you fit a manual adjuster in place of the stepper motor (Triumph don't sell manual adjuster any more btw but others will most likely fit) you still need to leave the stepper motor electrically connected otherwise you'll end up with MIL lit.

Still none the wiser. What is it where do i find it what does it do. If its a common fault why no recall from Triumph?

It's the idle adjustment. The roller linkage can get gunned up. Clean it and all is good. There are no failures of the stepper motor that require a recall.
