Monimoto GPS Tracker location
« on: April 30, 2020, 02:06:24 PM »
Hi all,

Firstly I appreciate that this may be a difficult one for people to answer openly on a forum as it may give away specific details about your setup but if you're able to answer on here or via PM then I would really appreciate it.

I've bought myself a Monimoto MM6 tracker and it seems a prety robust piece of kit.  I saw it mentioned on here around 18 months ago but only in passing and as a suggested alternative to the wired trackers.  My question is around location or positioning of it on the bike.  I have read that it needs to have the GPS antenna facing up or outward which is fine but that it can't touch any metal. I asked Monimoto themselves where they would recommend and their answer, if a little obvious, was not to put it in a place that was easily detected, found or where it was shielded by metal e.g. under the fuel tank.  I have tried the pretty obvious place of under the pillion seat but wrapped in an old Triumph toolkit pouch to disguise it and then cable tied it to a piece of the frame but it seems the GPS signal is not getting through or the frame is interferring with the device.

I figured putting it behind one of the side panels would mean it was still in contact with a metal frame.  So...does anyone have any experience of the device and recommendations where to put it?

Many thanks in advance.

It should be fine behind one of the side plastics, if you don't use a top box or a rack, under the tail piece maybe?

Thanks both.  I have a metal carriage for a Givi Trekker top box on the back so don't think I can fit it under that now but can have a look.  Given the current situation I have time on my hands to explore options with the side panels too but definitely good to get the feedback.

They stick them behind door panels etc. in cars.
On mine it's fastened to the bulkhead in amongst all manner of framework and cables, works perfectly.

Sure, a nice clear line of sight to the sky would be great but in practice it's difficult to achieve

Perfect, thank you.  I will investigate something similar then.

Have you not found the heat interferes with the tracker or poses a risk of melting it? Heat isnt good for SIM cards.
