Whats best lube for gearchange linkage?
« on: June 09, 2020, 06:09:52 PM »
Hi all
I just replaced my gear linkages with bolt-on items from E bay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Gear-Linkage-Rod-Ball-Socket-Joint-10mm-1-x-RH-1-x-LH-Thread-M6/252898244563?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649.
Together with adding a shim washer to the gear lever to eliminate side play, this has transformed the gear shift - no play and very positive action.
Anyway, I just wondered whats best thing to lube the linkages and keep them in good condition - would have thought any kind of grease would just attract dirt and accelerate wear??
Any ideas please?
PS trying PTFE spray at the moment

I packed my OEM ones with red rubber grease because they have rubber boots over the joint, works well!

For that sort of thing, I tend to use a general purpose spray grease so that it's able to penetrate thoroughly

Hi
Thanks for the replies but thats my point - doesnt grease attract dirt and dust even though its covered by a rubber boot?
This will then accelerate wear

Can't say I've ever noticed it on any bike I've had.
Besides, I'm not entirely sure how it could attract dirt

Mine is ridden mostly off road in extremely dusty conditions, seems ok.

I used name brand chain lube, gets right into the rose joint and sets pretty dry.

Its probably going to wash out over a period of time but when I do sprocket change or service I will give it another spray.

I don't think that its going to be any worse than grease and you know its getting right inside

That should be ideal, being compatible with the O/X ring seals in our chains.
