think we might just have found the perfect 50/50 compromise tyre in the Dunlop Trailmax Mission (wet and mud testing still pending as well as mileage) so I'll reserve final judgement

Ive had Trailmax Mission on for about 1,000km now. Did around 120km of rough and hard going dirt road and tracks last week and was very happy with how the tyres (and the bike) handled it. The tyres are fantastic on-road but I’d say they’re a tiny bit noisier than the Motoz GPS I had on my 800, but only a tiny bit and I put it down pretty much to the centre band on the Motoz. To be honest I doubt there’s much between those two actually but I’ll think I’ll stick with the Dunlop’s. If nothing else they look better! And probably a tad better off road. Both score really well in the above shootout, by the way.

Here’s a pick taken on some easy(ish) fire trails just outside Canberra. If you zoom in you can just make out the Telecom Tower and Stromlo observatory. There’s a whole network of trails covering the full gamut of difficulty all within 10 mins of my home. Is a great testing area and can ride all day and never cover the same section twice.

nice bit of real estate to have in your backyard  - that 900 and the Dunlops certainly look the part - enjoy!

the summer rains are just starting here in Johannesburg so looking forward to testing those Dunlops in the wet and hopefully a bit of mud over the next few weeks - I reckon with the ~1cm deep/wide grooves on the rear, they should clean well but we'll have to see

pushed the envelope a bit with them on a recent marshalling event with lots of hard braking/acceleration while doing a rolling roadblock for a bike convoy on tar - never even gave them a second thought, which is exactly the way it should be

k - the grooves in TrailMax Missions are not deep or far apart enough to clean mud - not even airing-down could solve the issue

went into some gorilla snot on a farm track next to a ploughed field over the weekend and my tyres turned into racing slicks within about 100 meters - barely managed to hold her right-side up as she was slipping and sliding all over the show with very little traction/control

to be fair - only a plastic bike or quad with knobblies would have been able to do that section - even the medic in a Range Rover battled

thus, while this was properly wet good-old clay soil, I expect the above conditions would be very close to what typical green-lanes in the UK would be and I wouldn't recommend venturing into the mud for any great distance on the TrailMax Missions - the occasional muddy patch before/after a water crossing shouldn't be an issue

on the wet but hardpacked gravel backroads they behaved perfectly with the Adv Pro mode letting the rear step out nice and controlled

still love the TrailMax Missions but at least now I know where their adv riding limitations are

Do the Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires work with tube type rims on my Tiger XCA ?  I don't know much about tube tires and don't want to convert my rims to tubless.

should be perfect with tubes - the XCA front rim doesn't have a tubeless bead while the back does - so if anything, I'm probably pushing the performance envelope using them as tubeless but thankfully no issues thus far

I carry a 21" tube JIC I run into a puncture/side-wall tear that I can't plug - 90% of my riding is on dirt (by choice)

I have about 6,000km on these on my Tiger 900. So far I like them but not sure yet whether they’re any better or even as good as the Motoz GPS I ran on my Tiger 800. The Dunlop’s are a bit noisier and surprised me that they spin up in the wet just as easily as the GPS, admittedly on a torquier bike. I had hoped these would be better given the centre rib on the GPS. Handling in all weather conditions seems very similar and I always got good mileage from the Motoz. The Dunlop’s still look great after 6,000km. Right now I’m thinking I’ll go back to Motoz after this set but not sure yet. Time will tell I guess. For what it’s worth (nothing) I like the look of the Dunlops better.
