Roller bearings, aka tapered bearings,  are a better choice over ball bearings if you need to replace them. Because there is more surface area in contact with the race, and the load is distributed over a larger portion of the roller, you get longer life and less deforming of the race (detent marks). Adjustment for wear is required less often. But ball bearings are good enough so I wouldn't change them out unless they need to be replaced.

Laterally unstable unless moving.

The OEM ball bearing set on my 2012 was brinneled (dented races) by the 20k mile service. Installed the roller bearing kit by the factory specifications and the steering has been smooth and solid for 45K miles. I expect the bearings will last as long as the rest of the bike.

I put tapered bearings in my 2004 goldwing as they suffered from a Brinell failure as well.  This was done at 16k common problem on the wing 900lb motorcycle.  I just past 100k miles and they are still going strong.   Dirt bikers tend to use tapered bearings from the factory.
