800 XCA Rear Suspension in 800 XRT
« on: July 27, 2020, 07:13:59 AM »
Hi all,
Im wondering about the possibility to change my 800 xrt rear suspension with the 800 xca one.
Despite every consideration about the Price, do you consider it possible ? Has anyone ever tried to do it ?

Have a good day,
Dani

This is a bad idea, if even possible, XC travel being 215mm against 170mm on the XR, you'd compromise the bike level and basically decrease the rake and trail, making the bike twitchy and very prone to leaning.
Or you'd need to put very little preload, to adjust the level like the XRT suspension would, so waste the added travel anyway, so why do it ?
Rake on the XRT is allready sportbike territory, it doesn't need more lean capacity.

There's also a case for having a supple more off-road suspension rear and more firm front, that could have adverse effect on braking, as settings are not balanced front to back.

Not trying to be a moral arbiter, but ask yourself what would you gain doing this ?
I fail to see an advantage there and the risk with higher longer travel suspension, is it will squat a lot more making the bike level unbalanced, inducing a rocking chair effect on front braking.
I experienced this on a bike that fully loaded had crazy squat on acceleration, making it pretty dangerous on highway.

Don't forget we say tires are the most important kit on a bike, but suspension balance is what keeps them tires connected to the tarmac.

Why not sell it and invest in a proper replacement, made for the XRT !?

If it's for free, give it a go and see how it pans out. It's a straight forward job to swap them over (and back again, if needed).

You'll need to lift the front as well to match otherwise it'll handle like a roller skate?
