What I experienced was a gradual expansion of the tank on my Tiger955i. The front mounting hole in the tank was slotted already to allow for heat expansion. Probably from about ten years ago I noticed that the slot wasn't long enough so that the holes didn't line up any more. So I had to file the front slot. It got to the stage where I got fed up with it that I sold it a couple of years ago, to let someone else have the problem.
I suppose it depends on the type of plastic used and I hope that manufacturers will use appropriate materials in future.
I have noticed that in the 800 handbook it says that the bike is good to use up to 25% Ethanol like wot they have in Brazil.
As for the rust problem....just goes to prove that you should use your bike all year round so that it's getting fresh fuel all the time.

Same, we use that in Alberta too.

Got some Lucas 10314 Fuel Stabilizer from ebay seller.
Enough for two tanks.

Also found Lucas Oil 10576 Safe Guard Ethanol Fuel Treatment. 473ml will treat 80 gallons.
Had a chat with Lucas rep and he said this is suitable for overwinter storage. Much better value than the 10134 option.
