No charging at low revs.
« on: September 19, 2020, 09:27:45 PM »
I have (had) following issue (2012 bike):
On the stand:
bike started - no charging at low revs
revs up - charging is back to normal

Riding the bike:
charging OK with just lights on
heated grips on - no charging
heated grips off - charging

Bike ridden for 400 miles (a day trip) and what initially seemed to be a failure ready to be diagnosed just disappeared. For the last 100 miles bike behaved as you wish - without any issues.

Trying to 'fail' the bike again today and all seems to be 'no problem'. Charging 14.2V at idle, drops below 14V when at higher load (heated grips, full beam on).

I would like to diagnose charging system and replace what is actually failing but can't diagnose (or don't know how yet) if all works fine for now.
- I thought of the R/R (I replaced one 3 years ago - over charging issue).
- Suspected failed one of the three phases on stator.
- Dodgy connection in the loom.

Did anybody expierienced similar issue and found what failed on their bike?

There are relatively high currents conducted through the connectors to the Rec/Reg, both on the stator AC inputs and the DC output. Very often these connectors build up an oxidation or worse, corrosion, become resistive, and cause intermittent conduction.
My first port of call would be to clean the connector metal surfaces and apply a dielectric grease. Simple things first. try that and let us know how you go.

Thanks for the reply. Will check the connections once I've got my large hands in there. Last time for r/r fitting the rad had to be taken off.

I forgot to mention, also do the same with your battery connection posts.
