Recommendations for a 30k miles bike
« on: February 24, 2021, 02:19:11 PM »
Hi folks,

After looking around for a while, I found myself a pretty decent bike that I should be collecting today!

Bike rides perfect and seems to be in pretty good shape! I'm one of those that prefers to do preventive maintenance for a piece of mind, so wondering that would you guys recommend to focus on for a bike with 30,000 miles (50,000kms for those with metric heads like myself)

My plan: oil, filters, valve check, new brake fluid and new coolant.

What would you recommend "since I'm there"? Don't want to spend a fortune and do a full restoration where not needed, but... if there's anything else that's really worth taking care of right now, I'll probably add it to the list.

Thank you in advance
Rami

check the service record, should have had a major one 6000 ago so shims etc might have been done but if you want to check from scratch you can download a triumph maintenance check sheet off the web

My first check would be brakes, apart from the obvious like pads, disks and pistons, pad retaining pins often seize up.

Then chain and sprockets, particularly the front sprocket.  Also make sure the chain adjustment bolts are free.

Then, general lube, including side stand and clutch switch plungers. They often seize up as well.

Then, enjoy it.

If you want to be totally sure on the fluid side then you could renew the front fork oil, though you don't indicate any year of make or model - non-adjustable forks or adjustable forks.  :027:

Yeah, I missed that piece of information didn't I?

It's a 2013 XC!

Thanks for the recommendations folks...   not a huge service history so I'll just do the basic checks to be sure and for my piece of mind.

Fork oil is a good call out, thinking of checking and possible repacking bearings?

Again, don't want to go too crazy either and end up doing a full restoration where it's not needed. At the end of the day, it's not huge mileage for a modern bike.

And...
Battery age/condition
Head stem bearing wear
Recent inner tube replacement?
-(valve stems can sometimes rust inside rim)
Clutch play adjustment
Laterally unstable unless moving.

That's another good call out, definitely will check freeplay on both clutch and throttle.

Good recommendations folks, thanks!

Chain adjusters seize so check them.

Check the condition of the main fuse and holder under the battery. Contacts here can easily corrode.

Definitely check, clean and re grease rear suspension and steering head bearings.

Although I didn't replace mine until 48,000 miles I would take a look at the wear and tear on the chain rubbing strip.

Check and possibly renew spark plugs. Easy to do when checking valves.
