Might be a silly thought - Security
« on: April 13, 2021, 04:53:51 PM »
Something i have often thought about (not done anything about it though)

What's the general consensus on placing a 5mm (or similar) machine screw / bolt in ones chain near the rear sprocket to prevent any rear wheel movement.

I appreciate it will........ mess up...... the chain etc if you were to roll with it in but it would stop cretins from doing the same ? Inconspicuous too

Or is it a stupid idea ? obviously have something very prominent to remind you to remove it...

I think it is always better to use a clearly visible means for deterring potential thieves - this method might stop the thief making off with the bike but would probably destroy the rear sprocket and chain in the process - cheaper to buy a security lock!

Disc lock, Grip lock, U lock - all big and easily forgotten - well maybe not the grip lock.  bolt through the chain, whilst you might remember it's there, there is not visible deterrent so bollocks the thief tries to take the bike, drops it when chain locks, rather than seeing the big locks and walking away.

True, all true, and i have a big (heavy) FO chain and disc lock already, but thought covert obstructions would frustrate the little shits. Didnt think about them dropping the bike to abandon it.... would i prefer a dropped bike with a damaged chain and sprocket or no bike..... ???

Thanks for replies, On a second note, has anyone got the Litelock, are they any good ?
