Testing 800 xca alternator capability
« on: May 10, 2021, 12:50:10 PM »
So got to test out a bit what my electrical system could handle and give myself a bit of piece of mind last night on my 2018 xca. I had recently added a few electrical items and lights to the bike and was not sure the alternator would be able to handle the load or not but it passed with flying colours for my use

The voltmeter on my plug in din USB adapter was showing 13.3 to 13.9v doing 90km/h in 6th gear while I had the following running

Front heated seat on high
Factory heated grips on high
Factory led high beams
Denali dm2.0 lights
Denali D7 lights
Zumo xt gps
Quad lock wireless motorcycle phone charger connected via a qc3.0 USB port on a din USB adapter

On my 2012 the output was I think 465W which is around double what most other bikes put out.  Near as I can tell the newer ones have similar output.

But not on your 2018, it relates to the year of XCa/XRt, basically the early ones, 'Gen 2', with standard halogen headlights had an upgraded alternator at 42A (approx. 500w) and later ones fitted with LED headlight ('Gen 3') have the standard Tiger 800 34A (approx. 400w) alternator. The spec for yours is in the owners handbook (issue 08/2017) on page 199. :028:
Also owned my 1979 Bonnie T140E from new!
