I use an Optimate 4.  I bought it to keep a BMW R1200GS charged as this is a canbus bike.  I now use it in non-canbus mode, connected direct to the battery, to charge the Tiger.  Maybe if you wanted to plug the charger into the aux power socket (which is what I did on the BMW) you would have to have the Optimate in canbus mode?
Just doing as much as I can for as long as I can.

On the Tiger 800, the aux sockets are wired straight across the battery (via a fuse) and so can be charged by any Optimate in normal charging mode. The issue with the BMW's is that the aux sockets are Can-Bus controlled and in Can-Bus mode the Optimate 4 has to first signal the Can-Bus controller (ZFE) to switch on the connection to the battery after which it is charged in the normal way.

Been using this charger for a few years now, much cheaper than the optimate ones and does as good a job if not better:

    Cost about £20 - 30

I have the same unit which I use between my bike and cars. maypole seem particularly well built, and comes with interchangeable fittings, so you can fit a charge cable to the bike and just plug in.

Iím glad to see that Maypole are good at something! They also produce quite a few accessories used by caravanners and I had a very poor experience with one of their products. I emailed them about the issue and they didnít even bother to acknowledge or reply to my email. I wouldnít buy anything with their label on it. 👿

    Fair point.
We all have different experiences with kit
I have had a lot of trickle chargers from Lidl/Aldi, plus my Oxford Oximiser which i now have specifically for the Tiger
The Maypole has given good service, and seems well built.
It's probably wherever the items are sourced from, I imagine some are good and some not so good.
As they .....say Your mileage may vary...

The Maypole 7423 appears to be made in China but, according to the instruction book, it has some impressive features including providing the  slightly higher bulk charging voltage that is required for AGM batteries. The only thing that I'm not sure about is that it indicates the bulk charging current is 2A/3A/4A which is somewhat higher than the 0.6 A/ 0.8 A bulk charging current used by the Optimate and Oximiser equivalents - it is possibly this high because it is designed to be used with batteries of up to 120 Ah :084:
