Exhaust hear shield with Expedition pannier rack

Hoping this isn't a stupid question (but suspect it is!)

I've just fitted Triumph expedition pannier rails, but had to remove the exhaust heat shield as it clashes with the rack. Is this normal? Is there a different heat shield to go with pannier rails? Or do people just live with it looking pig ugly?

No, correct rack for correct year should fit with no issues. Later (Gen 3?) Tiger had narrower (more oval) shaped exhaust can. You don't show your bike info .... could it be the later racks fitted to the earlier bike with fatter (more round) exhaust can.

Or if second hand, could the pannier rack taken the brunt of a fall?

As others have said there should be no reason to remove the standard heat shield. Something is bent or incorrectly fitted.
