My 1050 Sport needed 6 shims changed at 1st major. My previous 900 & 955 (both shim over) needed them all doing every time. 1050 Sprint had 2 bottom limit, all rest mid. The shim under bucket do seem to stay in tolerance better, once set correctly. We don't know how they came out of the factory; they could have been low, high or mid as we'd like them to be. For me, the 12k is the most important check.
Current bikes Tiger800 XRx, Tiger Sport 1050, Ariel FH 650, Yam Serow 225.

I did my valves earlier in the year (24k miles) and it was (?) dealer serviced at 12k and I like the clearances near mid spec so I had 8 of the 12 needed adjusting. Fortunately I was able to reuse 5 shim and bought the other 3 required.
Also owned my 1979 Bonnie T140E from new!

I checked mine at 6K and two exhaust gaps were particularly tight.
