What oil is in engine from factory
« on: January 11, 2011, 02:31:10 PM »
As every engine builder i know says you must run a new engine in on normal mineral oil before swapping to semi or fully synth, i was just wondering what triumph/dealers  put in. Anyone know?

castrol............umm there is a tag on the bike when delivered on the oil filler.....sorry but only a guess at semi.....the guess is based on a short start up at the factory before delivery, but couldbe wrong, but know what you mean about mineral from scratch.

Many many autos are delivered new with synth oil installed.  I don't know about motorcycles but it certainly isn't true in general that engines must be broken in with "normal mineral oil".  I'd just put in whatever Triumph recommends.  If it's a well built modern engine it could very well be synth.

That's because car engines are typically broken in on a dyno before installation. I don't think they're doing that with motorcycle engines yet.

I was told at the dealer's that it's semi, then fully synthetic after first 500 mile (or was it the second?) service.

Won't know for sure without seeing service instructions I guess.

I've had several new Triumphs. They have all come with a 'running in only' oil. They may have changed their ideas, but I don't think so.
Triumphs just keep getting better & better!!! Past Triumphs...Early TR6 & Speed twin, 1200 Trophy, 900 Sprint, Sprint sports,ST Mk 1, ST Mk11, Street Triple 955i, Tiger 1050,Explorer 1200, Tiger 800.

On the Street it was mineral until first service as a break in oil the synthetic there after. If you put synthetic in from the start the engine would never break in. I guess the 800 will be the same.
