Title: For sale: stainless steel chain adjuster nuts n bolts
Post by: Adey Bee on July 10, 2014, 05:38:17 PM
2 x M8 x 70mm (A4) stainless steel nuts and bolts, heads faced and polished (to prevent damage to aluminium adjuster block)
and a small tube of molycote anti seize paste.

£7.65 inc p&p (UK & NI) rest of the world slightly more depending on postal costs.

I still have a few sets left if anyone else is interested, get them swapped before its too late.

Please PM me with your full postal address.

Anyone still need any of these, I can still get some more.  You will regret not buying a set when you are trying to drill out the old ones, been there and done that.  What a nightmare!

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is wrong with the OEM part?
Title: Re: For sale: stainless steel chain adjuster nuts n bolts
Post by: Zaphod on July 18, 2014, 08:02:04 AM
Corrode in place, resulting in no adjustment, and an expensive /tricky drilling out process

The OEMs are mild steel bright zinc plated screws
The can corrode and seize if not regularly removed and lubed, stainless steel ones shouldn't do that.

I just bought mine off eBay

The nice thing about adey's ones, is he's ground/polished off the markings on the head, which might otherwise mark your adjuster blocks. Kinda expensive, yes, even when you add in the wee tube of lube as he is - but I'm lazy, and have ordered some :-)

I wasn't dissing his machined ones - fair play if he can add a bit of value and sell them on.

or make certain your OEM bolts are well lubricated.....
Replacing the OEM bolts is only part fo the problem. there may well be galvanitic corrosion with the cast aluminium swinging arm and the bolts, but there is also the opportunity for crap to enter the swinging arm and block the thread.

Post by: The Stealth on July 18, 2014, 07:33:49 PM
I can vouch for these I have a set I fitted them on Sunday and they look great, although I must admit the OEM ones were completely corrosion free (ACF50) and once loosened came away quite easily, so yep for the sake of £7:00 change them it makes sense,

Or if it happens when your bike is in for it's 12K service a whole new swingarm :017:

I had one shear off and i can honestly say it was a right pain in the ass to drill her out, if you cant lay your hand on a long series drill bit your buggered, its about 65mm from the end of the swingarm to the start of the thread thats approx the length of a normal 6.8 jobber drill bit and the tapped hole is around 35mm deep.
Ive got a new batch if anyone still wants a pair.
Cheers.

As with Blizzard one of mine was seized when I did my 12k service.

It is deffo a very long and arduous job drilling it out. Fortunately I was always going to remove the entire rear end of Tigger on the service to work not only on the swing arm but also rear suspension and rear of engine so it was drilled and Heli coiled on the bench. Also to note that the brake line bolts was also going the same way. Replaced all of these fixings with 316 bolts etc and then as per quality instruction coated with Moly grease. Even with copper grease from the 6k service they still went. Simple solution to the swing arm holes came by way of black Gaffer tape. On another ancillary note the chain rubbing strip was completely knac*ered. So they do need to be replaced every 6k miles but you only need the plastic bit not the bush or the rubber - this are still original. On strip down I found very little grease but no significant wear in the swing arm pivot, suspension bones or rear axle it was only marginal on the ali bushes on both front and rear axles but the seals were still good. Copper grease is fine on most of the bike it is just the swing arm area that need this level of attention.

Sorry to go slightly off topic chaps but Im sure you get the drift.

Cheers

Well happy with mine. One of the old ones was "almost" seized. Took over 2 hours of careful winding back and forwards and a load of WD40 to get it out. New bolts are greased up like a cheap  breakfast.   :001:

If anyone is thinking of having a tinker with the Tiger over the winter period, it might be worth your while swapping the chain adjuster bolts,
still have a few sets left, all bolts are now A4.
I cannot stress enough how by doing this small mod for a few quid can save you loads of time/ money /effort,  I've been there it was a complete B*****D of a job to get the seized bolts out.
If you use your Tiger in bad weather, don't put it off, like I did.

Finally got around to installing mine. They are a wee bit shorter than OEM, but that shouldn't be an issue. Mine weren't too bad, but getting gritty for sure.

When I get an order from overseas I take one of my prepacked sets to the PO and have them weigh it and get a price for postage to said country, the difference is quite surprising, its not always about distance.

Well, mine came at 9.30am today, great turnaround Adey!!

Fitted by lunchtime with all the area cleaned up and rear axle greased ready for the winter.

The originals (they are three years old) showed very definite signs of corrosion. I would guess one bad ride in winter conditions would have had them seized. Its a no-brainer!!

Thanks again Adey.

A question please.

Can you replace the bolts when the wheel is torqued up and without messing up the tensions.

That is, just unscrew old & replace with new?

Muddy Sump had the wheel off a few months ago but maybe a precautionary swap out?

Cheers

No, you will have to remove the rear wheel to replace the adjusters, and then set the correct chain tension and alignment.

Not sure Arma, I thought the bolts on the new bike looked more like stainless steel than those on my first Tiger, but as I couldn't be certain I swapped mine over anyway to be on the safe side.

Just got home and looked. Unlike other bikes I have had the bolts heads are forward on the spindle rather than behind where they will come out from the rear.

You can change bolts without removing wheel if you have a centre/paddock stand.

Place wood packing under rear wheel when on stand, remove wheel nut, withdraw axle just enough to get to one adjuster bolt and change it. Place a similar diameter rod or broom hande in through axle hole, with rod or broom handle push axle through and out, change second adjuster bolt.

Rear wheel, sprocket and brake will be supported on temp axle and wood packing, grease axle and push temp axle back through, nut and washer back on, adjust chain tension, torque up and job done.

Sounds a faff but really easy and saves removing wheel.

Nice one. A job for a wet winter's day.  Thanks for the tip.

No panic - I hope - as the axle was out and wheel adjusted recently(ish)

Another tip when you chenge the adjuster bolts is, if your chain tension is now correct, ......where the back of the adjuster block sits against the machined flat of the swingarm where the puch dots are.

Draw a line on both sides with a fine sharpie or a pencil on the machined flat where the block finishes, then when you reassemble, adjust the chain adjuster block back to the lines and you are as you were and good to go. The lines will stay on while you do the job and the wipe off with wd40 or similar.

can vouch for the fact that it is worth replacing bolts - picture below is how I spent last sunday morning...result of disc-side bolt shearing off flush...

I feel myself quite lucky in that I managed to source a second-hand swing arm for £65, swapped over myself in what was a  reasonably simple job - once I have bolt removed the original swing-arm can go on ebay so main cost overall to me will be time and effort!

This is what we are trying to prevent, ive been there and its a right royal pain in the ass, I drilled mine out after getting hold of a 6.4mm HSS long series drill bit.
Not easy, did it with swing arm still on bike.

Fitted mine today Adey, very simple and fast job.  Sadly after riding shafties for so long I had forgotten just how fiddly chain adjustment can be without practice.  No doubt I'll get used to it over time.

Be aware that the bolt and nut from Adey are both 13mm rather than the 12mm and 13mm originals so you will need x2 13mm open spanners.

Hi Grumps
To be honest I'm not sure, I don't even know if they think they have an issue, but still the bolts keep seizing in place and shearing off.

I guess there is no reason why I can't simply loosen the locknut. screw in the adjuster a few turns then reset it all - simply to keep the threads moving everynow and again.

Mine is a 2018 bike but I would like to avoid any future issues
