Title: 2012 tiger 800xc gearbox issues - jerks on 1st gear
Post by: jsarwar469 on March 23, 2020, 01:09:58 AM
Hi all!  Have had my tiger 800xc for almost a year. Bought it used 20kish miles. Started to have issue recently. First gear jerks every now and then and at times  few times back to back while in 1st. The rest of the gears are perfectly fine. I quickly go to 2nd when I can to avoid hurting anything else. The jerk is pretty intense almost feels like the 1st gear inside the gearbox is chewed up. Have anyone else had this kind of issue ?

Thanks !!

I'd check the chain first.

Yes, mine with 75k miles always starts doing that when it is in need of a service! Your valves need to be checked. Air cleaner needs to be clean. Stepper motor needs to be cleaned and lubed. All these jobs are fairly easy to do and all that information can be found on this forum.

Just weird that it only does it on 1st. The rest are fine.

It is the lowest ratio gear and the one that magnifies these type of issues because of its low ratio.

Copy. Are you referring to the possible bad chain?

All misfires or badly adjusted chain or another mechanical issues will be magnified in first gear.
I do agree with the others though you need to start at the front of the bike and go around it and check all the likely causes, chain adjustment and wear, front and rear sprocket wear, air filter cleanliness, clutch operation, etc. then get to the mechanical things like the stepper motor operation.

Also worth a check of  the cush drive rubbers in the rear sprocket and the front/rear sprocket teeth as well as the lock nut&shaft  on the front sprocket.

I went ahead and inspected the sprocket and chain they look pretty worn out my chain has rust on it sprocket teeth look straight but they are worn out from the edges. I am able to pull on the train and see slight daylight. The chain moves left to right side to side in other words. What is a good brand of sprocket and chain I can buy while on a budget. I looked at eBay and there is a chain and sprocket kit for sale made by Valor. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

The Triumph chain kit will be safest bet. Anything going cheap could be fake. Not worth taking a chance on something so important.

DID x ring are the best chains but there is a lot of fakes on the market, if you're not sure, not worth a chance.

Copy. Any recommendations for the US market? Looking to have it up and running before the weekend for a ride. With the coronavirus lockdown the roads and empty perfect time for long rides  :031:

That eBay item looks right. They include the correct front sprocket with the cush ring.

That sprocket is not made by DID.  It's made by JT Sprockets. Don't know if that's a good brand
And what about like gear ratios etc ?

As a newbie, you will probably have little to zero success properly installing the chain's riveted master-link (special tool required).

Harbor Freight and Cycle gear have them for reasonable cost.

Grind the heads off your pins then tap them out with a punch if you don't have a splitter.

This riveter is easy to use.

The sprocket research I did rated the JT sprockets very highly for quality, strength and wear resistance. They are the ones I specifically sourced for my renewal.  :028:

For fitting I mention a few YouTube clips (among many available) here you may find helpful.

Very helpful stuff guys! Much appreciate it. Should I go with the rubber cushioned front sprocket or the regular?

The rubber cushion is for sound deadening. I replaced my OEM sprocket with one without the rubber and frankly can't tell the difference. When the specket is going around I have a helmet on and ear plugs in and the engine noise is coming from between me and the sprocket location.

Copy. Now that I have the chance should I gear up or down ? I have the option to gear down to 47 rear sprocket or 50, or 52. And go as small as 15 for the center sprocket.  Factory calls for 15/50

14/50 is a popular combo and means that you donít have to adjust the chain length if you want to return to 15/50 at some stage.
Once you start changing the rear sprocket with multiple tooth changes you always need to adjust the physical chain length. Overall itís up to you and what you want to do with the bike.

I ordered the DID 525 VX chain with 124 links , hopefully it's an exact fit for 16/50. The triumph website recommend 124 links.

Is anyone able to confirm if 124 link is an exact fit for the XC model with 16/50? Now I'm a bit concerned.
