Title: Engine management light on after flat battery

Hello I had a flat battery yesterday went for a ride to top it up as only doing short journeys (2 miles to work) but noticed lights we’re getting dimmer so turned around noticed engine management light on so pulled over to see if I could reset it but would not start after anyway got it home put it on charge overnight so this morning tested battery 13 v connected it to bike put ignition on dropped to 12v when started and reved  still 12v so told it’s not changing prior to this I changed the regulater rectifier (not a genuine one) as I was getting pulsing lights and higher reves this in turn stopped that so though all was good but now the other issue can anyone help

12v with engine running. 
RR & / or battery. Probably replace both though.  Check wiring and connectors to RR as well.

Hello already changed the rr phoned triumph to see what they say and they said could b alternator £50 to check £400-£500 to replace not changed battery as that’s £120 but if I knew it was definitely that not a problem but don’t want to shell £120 out if it’s not that

Sounds like stator, can you test it. Could be something basic, connector?

That's almost twice the price you can easily get a quality replacement from numerous outlets, Motobatt £71 ebay, even Halfords would only be around £72 and do yourself.

Even before addressing the possible charging issue take the battery out and look for any date markings. If it is the original 2014 battery then it has likely had its day regardless of the charging issue ... and possibly even giving false charging indications. My 2015 battery died last September so if yours is original 2014 IMO 6yrs is acceptable on a bike. If it is that old I would renew, fully charge and then recheck the charging figures at the battery before looking deeper.

How old is the 'new' R/R and where did you source it.

Hello the rr is only two days old got from eBay new spoke to triumph about it and there saying as long as the connections are the same same size ect it will b fine I’ve phoned them again to book it into diagnostic but carnt get it in till the 3/3/21 no we’re open at least I will know either way instead of guessing

This is becoming my stock response.

Buyer Beware....There are a lot of poor RR copies on eBay, and elsewhere. Even reputable suppliers have what appears to be a higher than expected failure rate.
A genuine Triumph one, or a good used original would be my recommendation.
Of course if there is an issue with the Stator, or wiring, it won't help.

Hello little update looked on here about resetting the engine management light and said to run it through a heat cycle 3 times so let it run so fan comes on 3 times I’ve turned it off now do u have to let it cool 3 times also put a tester on the battery it’s 12v with nothing on when cranked it dropped to 10v then immediately when’s back to 12v so does this keen it’s not changing

Yes it has to be full cycles let it cool down between each.

So just finished the 3rd cycle and went to start it again and it would not start so think getting somewhere (only try to narrow it down before having it plugged in 3/3/21) so just checking prices on stuff that link by the way is great so is it a stater or alternator

It could still be something simple, be hopeful.

How old & how many miles? Any extra elec gizmo's? Only asking 'cos never had one fail......yet.

Hello it’s 2014 tiger 800 abs no extra electrical fitted 7500 miles but posted on here before about a rattle told it was normal but reading on here about rattling on the stator when doing the heat cycles it rattles on tick over but at 2000 rpm it stops to me this is not normal

Battery voltage when running should be around 14v. When my battery went (actual battery died and voltage colapsed) I had the engine management light came up, had it reset by mechanic rather than the 3 cycles, as I was going away. On the other hand when my regulator went, it did cause the stator to rattle. I replaced my regulator for a genuine. The alternator on the early tigers have a very high output. There are a lot of "look alike " replacements on the market, but many don't have the capacity to deal with the tigers output.  My bike 2012 Tiger road.

The charging system relies on the regulator disposing of excess power as heat. Unfortunately less extras mean more work for the regulator. My battery failure and regulator failure were separate incidents. Bike has done nearly 40K (miles)

Hello again can the rr and battery b tested off the bike to see if they have failed ordered new battery and fitted new rr but still think it’s not changing so would like to test old ones

Hello another update definitely the stator been to the garage and told it was definitely this dropping it in tomorrow he’s going to test the old rr and the battery ask him to look into the rattle that has been there since I’ve had it will update again when done

I'd still replace the battery. It's had quite an assault and will probably brick soon anyway. Unfortunately this can be expected with electrical faults like yours - cascades causing damage along the way.
